Special Education + -

Special education is specially designed instruction, support and services provided to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) requiring an individually designed instructional program to meet their unique learning needs. The purpose of special education is to enable students to successfully develop to their fullest potential.

Special Education process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, and accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in home, school and their community.

Occupational therapists focus on identifying and eliminating environmental barriers to independence and participation in daily activities. Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the children in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities.

Occupational therapists work to promote, maintain, and develop the skills needed by students to be functional in a Home, school setting and beyond. Active participation in life promotes:
• learning
• self-esteem
• self-confidence
• independence
• Social interaction

Occupational therapists use a holistic approach in planning programmes. They take into account the physical, social, emotional, sensory and cognitive abilities and needs of students. An occupational therapist works to develop skills for handwriting, fine motor skills and daily living skills. However, the most essential role is also to assess and target the child’s sensory processing disorders.

Sensory integration therapy aims to help kids with sensory processing issues by exposing them to sensory stimulation in a structured, repetitive way. The theory behind it is that over time, the brain will adapt and allow kids to process and react to sensations more efficiently.

Behavior modification (BM) is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that can be used to increase desired behaviors and replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Behavior modification techniques should be applied consistently across all areas of the children’s life.

Physiotherapy or Physical therapy (PT) is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty that, by using mechanical force and movements, remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function, and quality of life through examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and physical intervention. It is performed by physiotherapists.

Neurodevelopmental Physiotherapy promotes increased mobility, strength, postural control, flexibility, coordination, balance/core stabilization, gross motor skills and motor planning in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is used primarily to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to regulate their emotions, develop impulse control, and improve their behavior as a result.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/High Functioning Autism struggle with fears and anxiety. Cognitive behavior therapy has been helpful for reducing anxious feelings and behavior by making changes in thoughts and perceptions of situations through a change in cognition.

Remedial education is assigned to assist students in order to achieve expected competencies in core academic skills such as literacy and numeracy.

Remedial Teaching is an alternate approach for the regular classroom teacher in instructing the slow learner/ learning Disabilities. Remedial teaching is the use of activities, techniques and practices to eliminate weaknesses or deficiencies that the slow learner is known to have.

Parent Training Programme & counseling was defined as a program in which parents actively acquire parenting skills which aims to change parenting behaviors, learn child development, behavior modification techniques, therapeutic and educational support for improving pre-school and school-age children's behavior problems (such as aggression, hyperactivity, temper tantrums, and difficulty following directions).

Parent Training Programme & counseling incorporates collaboration with the therapist/ teacher to track behavior in school and link it to the reward program at home.
